Yahoo SCOX/CKX Crash And
Burn Archive Project
Currently archiving 82896 posts from 128 posters
On January 14th, 2005 due to unknown reasons certain yahoo financial message boards
started experiencing disappearing posts. On this date, cat_herder_5263 posted message
id 223408 asking if anyone had archived the Yahoo SCOX message board. In SCOX message
id 223465 I (spamsux99) replied that yes, in fact I do have an archive. I stated
that anyone who would like archived copies needs to grant me permission to redistribute/republish
their comments.
Responses to this post have led me to start the Yahoo SCOX
Crash and Burn Archive Project. As you may know, at any time SCOX may either run
out of cash, or lose their desperate legal lottery attempts to extract licensing
fees from linux users. Once SCOX finally does crash and burn, they will be delisted
and the Yahoo SCOX board will disappear. This project aims to preserve a record
of the crash and burn, and to provide useful ways to access the content of these
posts.
To make this project possible, I am asking for permisison from posters
to either the Yahoo SCOX or Yahoo CKX financial message boards for rights to republish
their comments under the CCL Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 license. A
copy of this license can be found at creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/.
In case of the loss of posts by yahoo or the eventual shutdown of the board, I will
archive copies of all posts by any poster who grants me these rights.
Periodically
I will repost this message with a subject of "Yahoo SCOX/CKX C&B Project". If you
wish to make your posts available for archival under the CCL license, please reply
with a simple message of "granted" to those posts on the Yahoo Message board. Due
to rampant nym spoofing, only the actual Yahoo username replying to these posts
is accepted. If you have multiple nyms, you have to logon as each one to grant permission.
The current home page of the Yahoo SCO/CKX Crash and Burn Project is http://badpenguins.com/yarchive/.
A basic browser interface for searching and downloading search results in html,
text, or sql dump formats is currently at badpenguins.com/yarchive/yaview/. Questions
or requests can be emailed to mikey at badpenguins dot com.

Well if my name isn't on
the list then you can put it there. I don't really care as I consider this open
conversation.

Actually, I earlier granted
republishing rights to all my "troll" accounts as well. I might as well list them
here for you.

Subject: Re: Yahoo SCOX/CKX C&B - stats?
My personal favorites are stats,
miss_cleo, and Al Petrofsky. I would love to have them in there. However, I don't
consider it any of my business why anyone makes their own choices in this regard.
I would certainly appreciate having their comments around for the historical
record, I never miss reading each of their posts very carefully. I consider them
the signal in a vast expanse of noise :)

Ruid, all I can do is repeat:
"Due to rampant nym spoofing, only the actual Yahoo username replying to these
posts is accepted. If you have multiple nyms, you have to logon as each one to grant
permission."
I don't want to open myself up to legal expense. You might recall
that yahouvre has been crippled after one poster made what I consider a not-veiled
legal threat because he didn't happen to like Andy. I personally don't believe he
would have a legal leg to stand on, but that is not the point. The point is to avoid
needlessly exposing myself to any legal expense just to provide an archive.
Gone are the days you could take comfort in the openness of the internet. There
are just too many wackos out there who would start claiming they own certain nyms,
such and such doesn't own that nym, etc... The simplest solution is to only take
grants from the profile of the logged in user...

Subject: Quick Stats
Just got done entering everybody up to this post.
We are now up to 95,841 posts from 167 posters.
Total posters: 5,230
Total Posts SCOX: 234,074
Total Posts CKX: 14,845
Total Posts: 248,919
That would mean 38.5% of all posts by approximately 3% of the total posters
are archived :)

Just to make your life more complicated,
you could also break this down by 6 month or 1 year period (start/end message #)
I expect a lot of the earlier posters have disappeared and you will have the best
coverage for the current quarter where people are active and seeing your archive
requests.

Subject: C&B project: PLEASE ARCHIVE ALL POSTS
you only need permission to
PUBLISH, not archive.
you can always receive permission ex-post facto.
not sure if you are already *archiving* all posts, or only those that have granted
permission to *publish*.

Subject: Re: C&B project: PLEASE ARCHIVE ALL POS
Just to chip in here:
Irrespective of whether a poster licenses all his/her posts, you could still
quote excerpts from a post under "fair use."
Therefore, I would also recommend
you archive (but not publish) all posts.

Argh! I suck at that sort of thing.
Anyone
is welcome to take a look at the source and submit patches or suggest how to implement
this - the viewer is at badpenguins.com/source/yaview/, this will show the database
structure. The sucker is at badpenguins.com/source/yasuck/.
Any dba's who
could whip out some relevant sql and/or php for me would be greatly appreciated
:)

goes bye bye.
