Larry stated that scanning with AVG may help discover and remove bugs before installing SP2 BUT that is not the case. I personally installed and AVG (Full Version) latest upgrade and it discovered absolutely nothing BUT after installing SP2 the system went into a cycle or continuous rebooting. Goodbye XP... Hello Slackware 10 and KDE 3.2! Sometimes people have to have Windows to play games or some special application so I will install a small XP partition that is not connected to the 'Net where they can play their games and share data with the Linux installation. I have to confess, I am exhausted. I hope I get out of here by midnight. I expect SP2 is going to add $100,000 to this years balance sheet. Thank you Microsoft. Did you uninstall any previously installed AV app before installing AVG? Did you scan per http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5878 ? Run at least two (2) of the free online scans found here: http://aumha.org/secure.php#freeav. One *should* be Panda's and I recommend Kaspersky for the other. Then run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in background: 1. CWShredder v1.59.1 (no updates available currently; fix all found) http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip 2. Ad-Aware SE (reconfigure per Post #2 in http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5877; fix all found) 3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red) Important: You must seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis v1.98.2 (http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.** I would urge you not to install SP2 until the machines have cleared the above hurdles, Brian. If SP2's already installed, consider uninstalling it before attempting the above. YMMV. -- ~Robear Brian wrote: > Hello Dear Friends: > > Well, I am working well into the night after working right through the > weekend replacing busted XP SP2 installations! > > Larry stated that scanning with AVG may help discover and remove bugs > before > installing SP2 BUT that is not the case. > > I personally installed and AVG (Full Version) latest upgrade and it > discovered absolutely nothing BUT after installing SP2 the system went > into > a cycle or continuous rebooting. > > Goodbye XP... Let me keep a straight face and ask... <clipped for brevity> You have got to be kidding me!!!! (I didn't manage to keep a straight face - not even close) Is that what you Windows guys do to stay on the air???? No, I am not doing anything like that because the AVG 7.0 experiment was on a clients specific instructions and, well, I was curious. That guy is now running Slackware 10 with KDE 3.2 and OpenOffice 1.1. I am finding more often than not that the majority of computer users are more interested in their data than they are the OS they are using. People want their pictures, movies, music, documents, address books and email. They hate paying money to retrieve their valuables because their OS supplier sent them a poison pill for their machine. Microsoft is absolutely crazy if they think people are going to persue the actions you describe in your email - that just ain't gonna happen. And you guys think Linux is complicated... Back to work - I gotta get some sleep. Best regards, Brian Linux Mystic open sorcerer
