Just a quick note to remind you that LoserFest 2004 is scheduled to begin
today with all the fanfare of an Druid wake.
Tomorrows Keynote Liars are:
Jeff "Is My Nose Growing" Hunsaker
Welcome to LoserFest 2004
Darl "I Am A Humungous Loser" McBride
The Past, Present and No Future
Also watch for Sandy "Bald Faced Liar" Gupta who will perjure himself in
front of the teaming dozen who will be attending. *Special* *Treat* Sandy
usually reserves his performances for court documents but you can watch him
live LIE about facts and events he could not have ANY personal knowledge
of.
SuckerFest 2004 is the final event to be sponsored by SCO since they will
soon be sliding into oblivion.
Be sure to keep your eye out for Chris "I Couldn't Sell A Glass Of Ice-Water
To A Burning Man" Sontag - head of SCOSux. He is the *LOSER* attempting to
sell SCO licenses to Linux users!
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...
His ONLY chance is to find somebody even more ignorant than he is dishonest!
Chris is a disreputable scoundrel who would sell you your own hat if you
put it down in front of him. Chris has been caught in some *VERY*
*REVEALING* statements made prior to Darl's 'Get Linux' campaign. SCO's
claim that they didn't know about IBM enterprise quality contributions into
Linux is ALL A BIG LIE! Whoops!
So, another senior SCO executive is caught in yet another *LIE* - No wonder
they are losing in court - left, right and center!
Now I know Tony will wring his hands and state emphatically that He Hopes
Linux will win but will resolutely and regretably consider the possibility
that "SCO could still win" Bwahahahahahahahahaha... what a bone-head - keep
your eye out for Tony at LoserFest - he will be the guy wearing his ass as
a gas-mask.
It is now my opinion that SCO's attack on Linux has actually made us
stronger as a community and has demonstrated our unwavering resolve. I know
I am not afraid of any IP wars with Microsoft (which has a long and
distinguished record as a LOSER in court).
Best regards,
Brian

And it's this type of commentary that makes me ashamed of being

Another witty and well thought out response from Brian. ;-)
By the way, Looks like Linux does have some issues to deal with
as far as "clean code" is concerned.

In a word, potentially 283 patents that _could_ be infringed on.

When Sun buys Novell they're going to have fun getting all those
straightened out in SuSE.

I thought YOU kept up on the news. :-) Sun said in the WSJ today
they were thinking about this.
Actual quote from Jonathan Schartz - COO of SUN is "With our
balance sheet we are considering all options".
He also said "What would owning the operating system upon which IBM
is dependant be worth? History would suggest we look to Microsoft
for comarison".
Current Novell market cap is $2.64 billion and Sun has cash and
marketable securities of $7.68 billion.
Sun had an opportunity to buy SuSE last year. Then Novell was
fored to raise it's bid to $130 million, and in the end paid
$210 million with a $50 million investment from IBM as part of that
deal.
Nothing is firm, and it was reported by the Wall Street Journal
this AM. [Monday 2004/08/02]
Then you get the opposite POV frm The Register.
The Register reports the story with a a title of "Sun turns WSJ into
Novell buy spin machine".
Chase all the links and you wind up on blog from Schwartz which
lays out different scenarios and why IBM should acquire
SuSE/Novell, but then the other problems that would surface if it
did.
He point out that whoever owns Novell controls the OS that IBM's
future depends upons. Then he brings up that if IBM acquires
Novell it becomes of "the product portfolio of a patent litigator
not known for being a social-movement company".
The Register calls the WSJ item a non-story.
We shall see - but stranger things have happened.

I agree - it is a non-story. It will never happen.
First of all, it makes some critical errors:
*IF* SuSE had been acquired by SUN in the first place, it would not have
been a crippling loss to IBM or anybody else. The truth is if any Linux
company goes mustang (Corel and SCO spring to mind), all their GPLed assets
stay with the community. It is not impossible or even unlikely that
somebody could take up the reigns of organizing a SuSE like distro and be
up and running in less than 90 days.
We did it recently with the XFree86 organization when they created a new
license that was incompatible with the GPL and I believe we could do it
even easier with SuSE by just taking over United Linux.
Keep in mind that ANYBODY can create a custom Linux distribution to suit
their exact requirements and IBM is a lot more than just anybody.
Google uses their own custom version of Linux to run their extremely
successful search engine and web services portal. It isn't RedHat and it
isn't SuSE - it's Google Linux!
That is the power and strength of the GPL, open source and Linux, no single
center of attack.
As for Jon, I hope he finds his way. SUN is now lying down with a viper so
they may never get back up again. The IT super-highway is littered with the
fly-blown corpses of Microsoft's allies and partners - SUN is starting to
look like just another dead man walking.
Lastly, SUN does not have the financial horsepower to buy Novell - with a
balance sheet constantly in the red, a declining market share and no clear
path to the future, SUN is living on life support.
Do not get me wrong - I used to love SUN, their terrific hardware and
rock-solid SUN/OS. I still own a fully functional 'like-new' SUN 3/60 with
a full compliment of genuine SUN 1meg memory strips - 24megs total. With
it's GIANT Sony 17" monitor (with all the BNC cabling) and it's optical
mouse that requires the special red/green metallic mousepad. It still runs,
but slowly on NetBSD.
But SUN, like any big animal sick and in pain, should be approached with
caution and should NOT be trusted.
Always a pleasure Bill,
Brian

Since none of the people posting about this here seem to have actually
been at SCOForum, I'll report that it did not resemble in any fashion
a Druid wake. The business content was spiffy in the keynotes and
Powerpointish in the breakout sessions. The food was Vietnamese and
Mexican. The entertainment was provided by pianist/singer Shane Stevens
(supposedly from Australia, can't find a website), who is on the
other side of Elton John if you were looking for Led Zeppelin,
and by comic Greg Hahn (http://www.greghahn.com/), who has a
corporate and Marines background and a superhyperactivespaz schtick,
and so didn't really conjure up priests staring at monoliths.

For the record, neither Hunsaker nor Gupta said anything about the
lawsuits or associated issues; they focussed on product announcements
and directions. Only McBride and Sontag talked about the IP stuff.
Overall the thrust of the keynotes was maybe 65% products, 35%
lawsuits, while the thrust of the breakout sessions was 100% products.
An odd part of the conference was Rob Enderle's keynote.
He speaks too fast to begin with, and in addition a teleprompter was
giving him trouble. He went back and forth between various nasty
things that have happened in his life and the current nastiness he's
encountered being (mostly) supportive of SCO. It was an interesting
and impassioned speech but could have been much better delivered.

You and your brethren probably said that last year as well. We'll see.

DaimlerChrysler lawyers tore Gupta a new anus so he is probably still pretty
sore. As for Hunsaker, he is probably busily shopping his resume to any and
all - he has sold almost all of his worthless SCO shares so he is looking
for employment where he won't be paid in worthless SCOSource license
certificates.

It's tough being only a second rate loser (Rob) when you are in the company
of major league losers (Darl & Chris)!
>> SuckerFest 2004 is the final event to be sponsored by SCO since they will
>> soon be sliding into oblivion.
> You and your brethren probably said that last year as well.
I didn't and I am unaware of anyone who did.
I think we are all aware that SCO has a limited lifespan because they have
limited resources. The income from product sales is not even beginning to
cover their Unix business expenses, let alone their legal expenses OR
liabilities.
I am always amused at how totally naive people can be - Oh yes, the party
was fun, and look at all the activity - EVERYTHING MUST BE JUST FINE!!!
That enormous sucking sound you hear in the background is banked dollars
circling the bowl and not being replaced by new dollars!
What was the attendance this year compared to last?
Were there any REAL large deal announcements?
As for Chris and Darl sounding confident and assured, that is the sedatives
and anti-depressants talking!
Another thing I find amusing is that people actually listen to these guys
after they have both been roundly exposed as SERIAL LIARS! Over and over
again their own words have been used against them in vast revelations of
deceit and disinformation. And yet, these guys can stand up and talk for 30
minutes and NOBODY asks them about their past LIES!
I read a report that the (little) crowd cheered when Darl appeared on stage.
I know, why - the crowd was filled with IBM lawyers and they were eagerly
anticipating another Darl swandive into the empty concrete pond. Some of
Darl's best material has made it's way into defense lawyers briefs.
8^)
Let us review:
Little or no SCOSource income
Declining income from core products & services
Expanding expenses for legal TEAMS
Expanding liability from current lawsuits
Inside partners demanding their money back
Just what the Hell was all the festivities about? A new mail server? A new
office suite? Are you kidding??? I have two words for you JL: OpenOffice
and Sendmail!
So, all I can conclude from your assessment and first hand review of
LoserFest 2004 is that you are (a) easily amused, and (b) easily confused.
Oh, by the way JL, what knowledge do you really have of what a Druid Wake
would look like? I could have been as much fun as LoserFest 2004.
8^)
Brian
