Subject: Adding Third IDE HDD to OSR5.0.4
Message-ID: <f53bd9d.0407021948.37693114@posting.google.com>
Hi,
I am adding a third IDE HDD to my box but there seems to be a problem.
This is my current configuration.
Primary:
Master: 20 GB HDD
Slave: CD-ROM
Secondary:
Master: 4 GB HDD
Slave: 20 GB HDD (I am trying to add this one)
I tried to login in a single user mode and typed
------- Start
# mkdev hd 1 1
Disk already configured as disk number 1 (/dev/dsk/1s0)
During installation you may choose to overwrite all
or part of the present contents of your hard disk.
Do you wish to continue? (y/n)y
.
.
Disk Parameters Values
--------------- ------
1. Cylinders 8912
2. Heads 15
3. Write Reduce 0
4. Write Precomp 0
5. Ecc 0
6. Control 0
7. Landing Zone 8912
8. Sectors/track 63
----------- End
This does seem to be a valid config for a 20 GB HDD
8912*15*63 = 8421840
What have I done wrong?
Thanks,
James

Absolutely not!
The syntax is:
fdisk -f /dev/rhd00
fdisk -f /dev/rhd10
fdisk -f /dev/rhd20
man HW hd for disk numbering definition

Oh My Gawd!
Is that what you guys have to go through to install a simple IDE hard drive?
PeeeeUKE!
Why isn't SCO dead already?
The 80's called - they want their Unix back!

Well, you are wrong again. That is what this person is going through
because he is learning. I wonder if you have ever added a hard drive. You
are a little too quick to knock what you do not understand.

What are you talking about? Are you joking?
To my left is PPro 200 with 64meg acting as a file server for my shop
network - it features 2 X 200gig HDs and 2 X 120gig HDs. They are running
Reiser filesystems and everything runs Slackware Current/10.0.
In front of me is a uATX desktop box with an AMD 2500+ Barton core CPU
running 512meg DDR at 333MHz. It features an 80gig ATA133 drive broken into
4 partitions swap, /, usr and var. It also has a 40gig ATA66 drive used as
a work space for large video files and a DVD +RW-RW burner on the secondary
IDE channel.
I also have a P200mmx with 256meg memory and an 8gig ATA66 IDE drive
operating as a firewall/NAT server for my shop LAN/WLAN - it also serves as
a mailserver, DNS server, webserver, php webmail portal, ssh/ftp, IM
server, dhcpd and nameserver! Other than that it does nothing.
I won't run down the various KDE/OpenOffice workstations or notebooks that
float around but I run both a 16 node 10/100 switch and a b/g WLAN just for
the shop and a b wireless bridge to the office.
Now, if you are suggesting I am somehow technically inadequate because I
won't run an archaic cryptic stagnant expensive and obnoxiously proprietary
operating system then I am guilty as charged.
However, I would suggest to you that it is you who is fundamentally stunted
because you insist on running an archaic cryptic stagnant expensive and
obnoxiously proprietary operating system.
The fact that you run such a technological goat turd should be a source of
embarrassment - you should be humiliated to admit such follies. Your
clinging subservience to this failing geriatric OS and it's obsessively
hostile caretaker organization cannot be explained away easily! Getting
enough roughage in your diet? Perhaps you should give the cheese plate a
rest for a while.
The mere fact that adding another IDE drive to an OSR 5 box is such a drama
says it all, don't you know.
