Subject: OT: ESR on AdTI

I haven't read every post lately, so this might have been posted already. (Apologies to all if it has.)

ESR has posted his [plain-spoken] response to Brown's hatchet job on Linus/Linux.

I think he's angry. (Of course, with Mr. Raymond it's tough to know, he probably sounds enraged even when he's happy. ;^) )

"The excerpts make it clear that this book is going to be a steaming pile of crap, full of anti-factual distortions, scare-mongering, and FUD. I haven't seen a book quite so egregiously shoddy and dishonest since Michael Bellesisles's Arming America. The good news is that, unlike Arming America, this book is so obviously bad that it is not likely to persuade anyone of its conclusions who isn't already zealously on the author's side."

Heh, hey ESR, don't hold back, tell us how you REALLY feel.

I prefer this one, from Jem Matzan of NewsForge....

Ken Brown's forthcoming book, published by the Alexis de Tocqueville Institute, is embarrassingly mistitled Samizdat: And Other Issues Regarding the 'Source' Of Open Source Code. No doubt you've heard of it by now, although more than likely you've only heard Andy Tanenbaum and others respond to it more than anything else. It's basically the world's largest troll, seasoned with more than a hint of flamebait. In the history of publishing there has never been a less scrupulous work than this book. It's a stinging insult to real books and genuine authors everywhere, harming the credibility of all of us who write for a living.
