Subject: Novell indemnification is B.S.

From www.infoworld.com/article/04/01/12/HNindemnify_1.html: > The indemnification program will go into effect on > Tuesday, the same day that Novell is expected to complete > its $210 million acquisition of the German software > company, Novell spokesman Bruce Lowry confirmed on > Monday. > > The program will be available free of charge to customers > who purchase SuSE Linux Enterprise 8, along with Novell's > "upgrade protection" software maintenance plan and a > support contract, from either Novell or a qualified Novell > channel partner, said Lowry. > > Customers will be protected for up to 1.25 times the cost > of their support contract and licensing fees with Novell, > or $1.5 million, "whichever figure is lower," Lowry said. So this is only 25% better than the your-money-back indemnity plans that people have been ridiculing. Plus, Novell is shamelessly using the fear of not being indemnified to try to get you to buy more product. So this is not really good news. (Fortunately, there are likely to be a few other developments in the next few weeks that really are good news.)

[Sorry about the formatting. I don't know why it didn't match the preview. I hope it works better this time.]

So this is only 25% better than the your-money-back
indemnity plans that people have been ridiculing. Plus,
Novell is shamelessly using the fear of not being
indemnified to try to get you to buy more product.

So this is not really good news. (Fortunately, there are
likely to be a few other developments in the next few weeks
that really are good news.)

What it really comes down to is what would the market value of Linux be if it was charged for?

SCO's estimate is from Alice in Wonderland. Nobody believes SCO's portion, (given there is any portion) is work $700 per CPU.

And even SCO has not maintained that is what their portion is worth. They merely say, if you give them that, they will not sue you. Whoop-de-do.

Yes, Novell's play is just like HP's. Nobody needs indemnification. On the other hand, some may beleive they do, hense the program.

Novell wants to sell Linux. This is sending a clear signal to fence sitters it is safe to buy it from them. I actually expect RedHat to follow suit, full knowing it is crap also.

Darl was right: Be careful what you wish for. SCO pushed the indemnification Straw Man. Everybody is now calling their bluff.

Every enterprise distributor will now offer indemnification. None of them expect it to cost them a cent.

But you know, Microsoft has got to hate this. They do not indemnify.
