Reporters are so stupid. It could have been worse, I guess. Everyone
who watched KSL could tell that McBride's a scum bucket.

Ha ha. Did you get quoted? (I haven't seen it). I've been quoted once.
Never again. Reporters really are stupid.

So anyone care to give better details of the news spot?

This is pretty much of a transcript here:

http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?nid=5&sid=58315

It's pretty lame. They interviewed Jason and I each for over 15 minutes
on camera. Then they portrayed it as a David & Goliath fight, and all the
local Linux fanatics were against SCO and we were all just freeloaders.

Basically, they drank SCO's Kool-Aid.

I promise I had more interesting things to say than what they showed. I blame
Darl.

In all fairness to the reporter, they don't have a particularly
easy job. I'm reminded of a cartoon that had a group of reporters
lined up to throw at a dart board. Above the board was the title
"Today I am an expert in . . ." and then the board was divided
into a bunch of different topics (medicine, politics, technology,
business, religion, history, etc.).

I used to work in journalism, and I can tell you that example is
not far from the truth. You don't know from day to day what your
assignment will be, but you're expected to report expertly on
whatever assignment your given.

And it must fit the space allotted.

And you're on deadline.

And you must explain it to an audience that is even less expert
than you.

And it must be interesting (gotta sell that advertising space!).

In my experience, most reporters at least try to be accurate.
Considering the reporter was obviously not well-acquainted
with the OSS world, I felt he at least tried to explain it fairly.

If nothing else, it gets the issue out there in the general
pantheon of current events for a lot of non-technical people,
and I'm betting that can be a good thing for OSS.

What I am wondering is why Jed Boal did not first look at KSL for some
information? They have a three-time published author in the Linux field
on staff. I could have provided him with all the background he needed to
give a fairly comprehensive explanation.
Plus, KSL uses Linux for nearly all their web stuff.
I'll have to go have a chat with him today.

Actually, Jed mentioned that they had found someone on staff who knew
about Linux, but they couldn't put him on camera, so they went looking for
others that could go on camera. They got quite a bit more from both Jason
and myself, but obviously didn't use any of it. I sent an email to Jed
last night to let him know what I thought. Poor guy. He's probably heard
from a bunch of people.

The KSL web director has just informed me that we have a new forum site
regarding last night's piece on SCO. We welcome any and all constructive
comments and/or feedback.
If community participation is positive, we would like to make this an
ongoing format for any future pieces that generate as much interest.
I have provided a direct link to the page below.
Thank you for your comments.
