Subject: SCOX and the Dinosaurs
<< msft and sunw. also, I think that fox77
guy is a scox reseller.

I have a real compassion for the SCOX VAR’s,
I really do. And I mean this honestly, I am not being sarcastic. SCO Unix is (was)
a venerated product, that did a damned good job. Not cheaply mind you, but in its
heyday, it got the job done. In 1992 I worked in a shop that ran SCO UNIX386 on
a Unisys 486 25 Mhz with 32 megs of RAM. Using Digiboards, and state-of-the-art
MultiTech 9,600 baud modems, we ran a $25 million revenue per month company, with
36 users (data entry) off that damned thing. The desktops all ran Windows 3.1, but
that one box was the heart and soul of the company. And that was only 11 years ago
folks.
A lot of SCOX VARs are mom and pop operations, and mom and pop are
getting ready to retire. Up until recently, they were working for a respected company
with a venerated, but long-in-the-tooth operating system.
SCO (As in Santa
Cruz) knew it had to change to survive, and sold its UNIX to SCOX (otherwise known
as SCUMX).
So mom and pop end up in Las Vegas, where Darl and company do
a “Spinal Tap” type show... “I hope you like the new direction of the Band”, while
dancing around a 6 inch high replica of Stonehenge.
Then they get a microphone
thrust in their face. What did they think of the presentation? “OH MY GOD MY RETIREMENT
IS FUCKED!!!”. Well that was what they were thinking. What they were saying was
“I am relieved. I think Mayor McCheese has a strong case against the IBMBurgler”.
They may have also heard about the nasty’s on this board, and are trying to
protect their business in their declining years.
I am a 49 year old programmer.
I cannot tell you how many classes, seminars, languages, and metaphors I have been
through to keep my skills current. Some have not, and they are hoping against hope
there nitch lasts until they can get out of the business.
So anyway, I have
compassion for the VAR’s. Some dinosaurs make it to their golden years. Others get
wiped out by asteroids (trademark by Atari)

I have no sympathy for the VARs who were
in SCUMForum 2003 and are still VARs.
They are as scummy as their Masters
in Lindon... they cheered the dog 'n pony show, then cheered when it was announced
that GPL software would save their ugly, stupid software.
They are hypocrites,
liars and losers. I was an oldSCO reseller and ISV. When I dropped them in favor
of Linux, my grosses went UP.

Subject: I love my job...
You are going
to love this, you really are.
Large companies like mine, particularly if
they grow by acquisition as mine did, have a number of small system requests for
small parts of the company. Those that concern my internal client cross my desk
for technical appraisal. I don’t make the software buying decisions, I only give
the technical appraisal, but if I say “no”, it usually means “no". (The flip side,
I can say yes to a number of competing systems, some else chooses among them)
You will never guess what crossed my desk today. Yep. A solution that uses SCO
Unix. But here is the good part.... the solution was a vertical application that
runs on SCO Unix. So not only did I get to nix it, I got to tell the vender why
we would not consider his software.
The “drip, drip, drip” you are hearing
is the sound of SCOX customers deserting.
