Hello Dear Friends:

"Big Blue counters Gates' offer for Indian software"
http://in.news.yahoo.com/021212/43/1z0mv.html

IBM see's Chairman Bill's $500 million and raises "sustainable software
industry hub"!

8^))

Here are a couple of my favorite passages:

<quote>
After Microsoft chairman Bill Gates' lavish offerings for health, education
and proprietary software, his company's biggest competitor IBM has offered
to transform India into a software industry hub if it adopts the open source
standard.
...
"We are willing to invest heavily in the enablement centres based on what
decision the government takes. It should standardize on open source and we
will create centres for the software industry to flourish," Amuj Goyal, vice
president, solutions and strategy, IBM software group, told IANS.
</quote>

One of the significant points not mentioned is that Bill Gates and Microsoft
are noted notorious liars whereas IBM has a solid reputation.

By the way, been pretty busy of late creating Linux desktops for an
all-Microsoft house - Started a couple months ago with just a simple Linux
gateway and will soon have 18 Linux KDE/Gnome desktops with mail/webmail,
dhcp/ddns, file/printer services and online PHP groupware. (Not a drop of
Microsoft .NET, whatever that is...)

Best regards,

Open source software is great. I recently got a cert for
Linux and have been "playing" around with a network I set
up at home. I still use W2K as my main environment, but
when Linux can use most basic software applications that
Windows can I'll probably make the switch. They're
getting closer though.

The Linux desktops I install on corporate computers comes with a full array
of office applications, some of which rival anything Microsoft can build.

I prefer the KDE desktop but many people I know and respect like Gnome.

It takes me about two hours to install a complete Slackware 8.1 system
including both KDE and Gnome desktops - this includes a thorough HD test for
flaws, installation, building a custom Linux kernel and configuration. I
could possibly do if faster by deploying prebuilt images but I don't - yet.

There are awesome resources available online as well as many local Linux
computer clubs - sometimes a Penquinista comes in handy.
