I had a client phone and ask for help because he had a guest laptop (Sony Viao) who couldn't connect to his LAN - even his ad hoc Windows IT guy couldn't get it running. Wanted me to come down and have a look. I made grumpy noises and explained I had never worked on XP but the client insisted. I found that Microsoft dumbed up the XP interface even more and has succeeded in hiding all the important stuff. Understand, in Linux, I can configure a node on a network with a host name, domain name, an IP address, DNS and routing information with a few lines of text. Microsoft has created a Help System that doesn't help, a help system that is incorrect, a help system that gives WRONG information. This machine was slow and ponderous yet is was powered by an 800MHz Pentium III and 256MB of memory - it was a slug! Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap! Windows XP is Total CRAP! What a Nightmare! "Just try to switch tasks when an app craps out on you, even in XP." Been there done that. No problem (Corel Draw 10 has taken a dump on a few of our computers, still allowing to switch tasks). Multitasking: A common scenario at my print shops At one location, we have 6 Dell Boxes with Windows XP Professional on a network, connected to a satellite (Hughes). Satellite (Internet) connection broadband is required for large print file transfers and the iShip Shipping Software that is on the web (co owned by UPS and MBE). All six system run Internet Explorer 14 hours of the day for shipping purposes...connected with upload and downloads of FedEx/DHL/UPS tracking, accounting and database transfers to the main hub which gets dumped to Tennessee. All six systems also run Outlook 2002 during the 14 hour days. They send and receive attachments and emails to customers automatically. Uploading of proofs and downloading of files. Each system is tied to a different email address which ties to a different prepress machine. Rips, Digital Color, Risographs, Digital Black, and Postal mailers with sort/seal/fold/postage auto setups. Each email address is given to the consumer based on which machine will run which print job, and each station then has the ability to be run and accessed completely separate from each other for DTP purposes. All six systems run highend Desktop Publishing software during the 14 hour shift (and are used almost the entire time). I have 3 systems with Microsoft Publisher 2002 and Microsoft Publisher 2000 (running the whole time). I have one system that has Adobe PageMaker 7.0 with Adobe PhotoShop 6.0, Adobe Illustrator 10 and Adobe Acrobat 5.5 that run and are switched between one another all day. And one machine that has QuarkXpress, Microsoft PhotoDraw and Adobe Acrobat 5.5 running. And the last machine has Corel Draw 10, Corel PhotoPaint, Corel Office 2002 and Corel Venture and Microsoft Word running all day. While all those programs are running with Internet Explorer and Outlook 2002 (uploads of 200+mb attachments as well as downloads) on every machine, they are put under a serious multitask load that engages in: 80-200mb+ files in PhotoShop that undergo system draining redraws and effect draws from the hundreds of plugins, layer changes. 10mb to 1GB files in Illustrator going through updates, redraws etc. On top of that, the network is also connected to one system that is the actual touch screen (monitor) cash register, which is running the entire day, continually sending financial data back and forth between the back station (figures are being calculated in Quick Books Pro 2001 which is always tied to Financial Manager 3.0 (MBE proprietary software), monitors and updates inventory throughout the day, generating self printing and self uploading order reports based on a certain figure.....when inventory gets to a certain level, and order is automatically placed/ordered online (or printed...or faxed...depending if that vendor allows online orders). We run all the programs OPEN all day, multitasking without any problems (except for the Corel Draw/Corel WordPerfect 2002 machine...those Corel products are so bug ridden). I don't have time to list the other programs that are running in the background (Adobe Distiller, Messenger via Exchange and many more) Common people or not common people, the above cannot be performed in the Mac OSX that we have at our other print shop. -- Brian Kvalheim Email: mspub...@msn.com Microsoft Publisher MVP For FAQ's, Templates and More: http://www.mvps.org/publisher "Brian" <br...@subdude.com> wrote in message news:uX9OPV5uBHA.2280@tkmsftngp05... | Hello Dear Friends: | | XP is a pile of CRAP! | | I had a client phone and ask for help because he had a guest laptop (Sony | Viao) who couldn't connect to his LAN - even his ad hoc Windows IT guy | couldn't get it running. (No) > Been there done that. No problem (Corel Draw 10 has taken a > dump on a few of our computers, still allowing to switch tasks). I changed the IP address on the Windows XP laptop and it required rebooting. I installed a serial mouse and Windows XP required rebooting. I changed domain and host name and Windows XP required rebooting. Microsoft XP requires constant rebooting for even elemental changes whereas all the tasks above can be completed and activated without rebooting in Linux. Brian, I do not believe for a second you have not rebooted those XP boxes - I just know better. > Multitasking: A common scenario at my print shops I did not mention multitasking - who mentioned multi-tasking? Just so we can conclude this little exchange, Unix invented multitasking and Microsoft has never had it right and the jury hasn't returned a final verdict on XP. You must understand that everything you rave about is old news to Unix/Linux users who have had multi-user and multitasking since their beginning - it was never an add-on. My point which I will restate: Microsoft XP is crap because it is deliberately incompatible with other desktops, including earlier versions of Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS and just about everybody else on the planet. It is deliberate and it is heinous and it DEFINITELY is not in the best interest of the purchasing public who buy it and the installed public who have to work with it. Microsoft Windows XP is expensive, high maintenance, insecure, invasive, bloated, ponderous and doesn't play well with others. Microsoft is a convicted predatory monopolist. 8^) Best regards, Brian BLOFH aka Linux Mystic

That fact is I have been working with computers for over 25 years, have mastered many operating systems including Microsoft Windows prior to 98 and have extensive hardware, firmware and network systems experience. I try to make it clear to my clients that I do not wish to work on anything other than network services and specifically will not work on Microsoft desktops. As it happens, I am usually able to diagnose and solve many Microsoft desktop problems faster than most Microsoft IT guys. As it happens, I find myself spending more time solving Microsoft issues when on away missions. Working with XP for the first time was an eye opener. The interface may be a little prettier but obfuscation was the order of the day. All I was able to accomplish was establish a connection to the 'Net through the Linux gateway. I was able to establish XP shares on Windows 98 machines but XP could not share any of the LANs public shares. I was unable to find the Microsoft IPX protocol on XP and was endlessly misled by the Help section. I work with Linux which has a comprehensive and powerful multi-tiered help system for every significant application, daemon and utility. XP Help is a nightmare. My advice to the client's guest "a consultant" was to scrape XP off his new laptop and install either Linux KDE or Windows 98se. 8^) Best regards, Brian BLOFH aka Linux Mystic

I choose Mandrake 8.2beta3 (downloaded for free) as an example of a bleeding edge Linux KDE desktop, KOffice suite and many KDE utilities. After installation, I was able to connect to the Windows/Samba LAN within minutes. No reboots, no BAD help and no nasty Wizards to interfere with the work flow - it was marvelous. 8^) I then spent two more hours fine tuning and installing all the original datafiles. I will spend a couple hours this week instructing Ed (not his real name) in the differences between Windows 98se (his original OS) and KDE 2.2.2 - very easy conversion. I had to speak with the manager of the computer store where Ed bought his Viao and explained that XP wasn't performing properly and Ed wanted a refund for the unused XP - the manager was testy until I suggested the Viao would be returned and a Dell purchased, without an OS (much less money all around). Just another day in paradise. 8^) Best regards, Brian BLOFH Linux Mystic
