Hello Fellow Slackers:

I have an idea that may appeal to the artist in you.

I would like to have a graphic illustrating a slightly crumpled cigarette
package branded "Microsoft Windows" with a few cigarettes poking out of the
end. Lots of warnings and messages can be included on the package but
nothing too "over the top" - things like "Microsoft Windows can cause death
to innovation".

The headline would read "Just Another Dirty Habit" or something to that
effect.

I am replacing Windows 95/98 desktops (security/stability issues) with
Linux/KDE and my biggest problem is personnel Microsoft Windows Momentum.

I would love to have such a graphic that could be dropped into a desktop
background - both Windows and KDE... 8^)

If you have or know of such a graphic, please email it to me. If you are an
artist and would like to take a swing at this for fun - please keep me
apprised.

Thanks everyone.

And if somebody reads this and is offended that this isn't a specific
Slackware issue and feels compelled to complain and flame me, grab your
testicles with both hands and twist & pull with all you might.

It turns out I think Linux users are for the most part very creative and
Slackware is my distro of choice.

8^)

Best regards,

Brian

Why do people insist on promoting Linux as "not Windows" and constantly
drawing attention to Microsoft's deficiencies? I hate Windows, truly hate
it. Even so I'd much rather see people say "Use Linux because it has
XYZ great features and is blah blah blah" rather than "Use Linux because
Microsoft are evil and Windows sucks."
And then they spend huge amounts of time trying to come up with exact
clones of Windows software. Think KDE, Evolution or just grep for
/is a (clone|(re)?implementation|port) of (the)? .* (package)? for Windows/
on freshmeat.

This just makes OSS developers and users look like hypocritical whiners.

Surely your artists' time would be better spent creating a positive
image for Slackware than a negative image for Windows.

In a perfect world ruled by reason and rational thought your suggestion
would be appropriate and the recommended course of action.

The world I work in is populated with bitchy Microsoft Windows users (98%)
who hate anything different, ANYTHING AT ALL! The first time I installed a
Linux desktop for a client, the employee went on strike until Windows was
re-installed. It had nothing to do with the utility, security, stability and
beauty of Linux or Windows - it totally had to do with the employee hating
something that was different. In the end, the employee paid out of her own
pocket to have Windows re-installed on her desktop.

I have since installed over 100 commercial Linux desktops and it is always a
struggle for mindshare. It is now a little easier to insiuate a Linux
desktop in place of Windows but anything I can do to help gain mindshare is
helpful.

Mindshare.
Mindshare.
Mindshare.
Mindshare.
Mindshare.
Mindshare.
Mindshare.

The fact is, there is very little to motivate most individual Windows users
to change to Linux. Individual users are willing to spend their time or
their friend's time to keep Windows humming along. Even some power users are
satisfied with Windows and little can be said to change their mind. Linux is
finding it's way onto business desktops only because of perceived security,
stability, ease of administration and sticker cost.

Linux isn't the problem - it is the "change" part that people dislike.

Brian
