Hi JAS:

Microsoft has nothing to do with choice.

I have been taking digital photographs for 4 years now and recently
experienced a Microsoft Windows meltdown (not my first) - kept reloading
multiple copies of installed hardware devices until nothing worked.
Eventually corrupted filesystem during attempted repair and everything was
lost including 4 years of JPGs of my daughter growing up.

There is a happy ending. I have an old AMD5x86 133MHz 32MByte Linux router
that also provides many services, one of which is doing 4 stage backups of
ALL my data files - this includes mail, IE favorites, Windows desktop,
menus, docs, JPGs and MP3s. I was able to restore Windows 98se, do all the
updates online, restore all my data files and be up and running in less than
6 hours. I usually re-install Windows a couple times a year because the
installation becomes fatigued..

Compare that to the aging AMD5x86 which has been running continuously for
the last five years with perhaps less than a hour downtime TOTAL. I updated
the operating system in '99 (that required two reboots) and the kernel in
2000 (a single reboot) and added a large HD this year (about 15 minutes down
time) and there have been a few power failures (breaker problems actually).

What other services does it provide, you ask? Well, it runs as a masquerade
(sort of like NAT) firewall gateway router, Bind DNS, Apache web server (I
laugh at the Code Red virus), ftp services, sendmail MTA, file & backup
services, ssh (secure shell) and more - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52
weeks a year + leap years!

One of the things I do is build these 'Net appliance boxes for clients who
have hardware insufficient to run Microsoft's desktop or network services
applications. When a client needs a firewall/gateway I install a small Linux
package, less than 80 megs, and am able to get it running in a couple hours.
Add the price of a couple PCI NICs and a small hub/switch and you can run up
to 254 desktops including average mail with a Pentium 90/32meg through a T2
without breaking a sweat (perhaps 25% CPU utility). Don't try this at home
kids with Windows NT4/2000/XP - it will cost $1000s of dollars for the
software licences and won't run on the aforesaid P90/32meg box! Oh, as a
sidebar, one of the first thiings I do with these old machines after a
thorough test of the hardware is to disconnect the on/off switch and reset
switch - it prevents onsite Windows administrators from administrating the
Linux box. 8^)

It is always a happy surprise when I tell clients how much they will have to
pay for their new Linux software licences ($0 down and $0 per year per
seat). Some haven't believed me and thought I was running a pirated software
scam until I showed them the facts online at numerous Linux websites. Now
That's Entertainment!

I am able to administer these machines remotely and install upgrades and
patches without rebooting. Since I don't have to be onsite, costs for
routine updates, configuration and administration are greatly reduced to the
client and a major savings of my time.

The thing that I find most amusing is that despite the fact that I am known
for my Linux networking services business, I actually spend more time
working on client's Windows desktop machines (this always involves an away
mission which is very expensive) or the box has to be transported to my site
(also an expensive proposition in time and money). I don't work on Microsoft
IIS equipped boxes in any form (except when replacing Microsoft Licenced
software with Linux).

Microsoft's network mission statement;

"You're not just paying more, you are also getting less!"

Microsoft is constantly re-engineering it's licencing policies to draw even
more water from the well.

or

"A backdoor in every server!"

The Code Red virus only runs on flawed Microsoft technology.

Best regards,

Brian
(the other Brian - the one that knows Linux/Unix/*BSD)

Ah, a new SIT (shill in training) what a wonderful sight.
Interesting that your subject line was, shall we say in a charitable way,
something less then original?
Interesting too, that the spin you linked to included a reference to
"eastman kodak" in the "Industry leaders participating today in the showcase
of digital photography solutions around Windows XP....."

Perhaps you are unaware, but at least one of those "industry leaders
participating....." is a small little start up company from Rochester, NY -
still just getting their feet wet in the photography field. <g>
Kodak is (quite unlike the spin offered in the link you proffered) not quite
"on board" or "participating" in the sense your referenced link would lead
"folx" to believe. (but of course that is exactly the point of "spin" and
"shilling" is it not? so, as a SIT you deserve a big "attaboy".

Shill as you will that's certainly your prerogative. For you own sake I
implore you to at least keep an open mind and consider alternative points of
view.
Hopefully this link will give you that opportunity.

Hey Slip:

"Slip Jigs" wrote...
> Better watch it! You may end up like the guy who invented

I am not alone. A number of my friends are sys admins who routinely run
Linux network services in place of Microsoft products. It is just so
economical and when the BAS sends it's threatening letter about licencing,
all that has to be checked is the desktop stuff.

A couple of BOFH sys admins I know are starting to move some desktops into
Linux when all that is required is word processing, email, data entry etc.
Each Linux KDE desktop requires more time to setup but requires much less
time to maintain and administer. I have talked with a client who may be
interested in trying to convert a few desktops over to Linux. It's not so
much the initial licence fee as the cost of upgrades and maintenance that
makes Linux viable for the business desktop.

I recently installed a four line Linux FAX server for twenty busy desktops.
Creating the exact same functionality with Microsoft and proprietary NT4
software was priced out at ~$2800 by a local MCSE. I was able to actually
bring it in for less than $680 using Linux, existing hardware and some eBay
SatisFAXtion 400e fax/modems - no monitor, video card, keyboard, all admin
is done by ssh. I have installed these in the past and they require zero
maintenance - just like the Energizer Bunny! To know how much I made for
less than five hours work subtract what it cost for the Intel modems
($78.00). No maintenace contract, no reoccurring licence fees and no MCSE.

The home desktop is still owned by Microsoft because of it's umbiquitous
support for all the odd software - most business installations don't need to
be able to play Starcraft or Diablo II.

Almost all businesses I am working with don't plan to move from the 98se/2K
desktop because of the changing licencing schemes Microsoft has developed.
It is interesting to note that most of the owner/managers still want the
latest and greatest from Microsoft for themselves despite what it may cost -
this may change when they take it home and it goes dead after 30 days
(thanks Microsoft).

Best regards,

Brian

Oh really?

Since when is Kodak a competitor of Microsoft?

Also, it has been my extensive experience, supported by numerous court
descisions, that it's Microsoft that is the liar and deceiver. Microsoft has
pulled this crap before and they are doing it again.

Perhaps you should reconsider your rash statement, Adrian.

As a sidebar to Sandi; Here is an excellent example of a product by a major
developer, Kodak, being deliberately sabotaged by Microsoft.

Hello Brian (the other Brian),

Hook, line, and sinker. You accept Kodak's word as if they don't have a
stake in pressuring Microsoft to put Kodak's software ahead of their own and
their competitors (like Fuji). Kodak's word rings very hollow when you
match it up with that from the good folx at Fuji Film.

Paul

Microsoft has been doing this sort of thing for over a decade in my personal
experience and I have been in the desktop computer business for over 25
years.

And yes, I do believe Kodak. Kodak is an excellent company with over a
hundred and ten years of straight dealing with the consuming public and it's
competitors. Microsoft has been found guilty of being a predatory monopolist
who is using it's dominant position on the desktop to suppress competition
in every venue it enters. "STAC v Microsoft" "DrDOS v Microsoft" "United
States v Microsoft - 1995" "United States v Microsoft - 1997"

Microsoft is now scrambling to secure as many new sources of cash flow to
replace the loss of double digit growth in the hardware business.

Here is a thought for all Microsoft's new partners;

"When you starve with a tiger, the tiger starves last."

So Paul, it is my belief you have bought the Microsoft spin, hook, line,
sinker and copy of Angler's Journal.

Best regards,

Brian
